Scale on Houseplants: Remove Adults and Watch for Crawlers
Scale control requires more than wiping off visible brown bumps. Young crawlers can settle after adults are removed, so inspection of stems and veins must continue through the follow-up period.
Confirm That the Bumps Are Scale
| What you see | Most likely clue | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Small immobile brown bumps | Scale likely | Inspect stems and leaf undersides |
| Sticky leaves or surface below plant | Soft scale honeydew | Look for ants and sooty mold |
| Yellowing and weak growth | Heavy feeding pressure | Reduce population |
| Tiny moving crawlers | Young scale stage | Best timing for many controls |
Soft Scale and Armored Scale Differ
Soft scales may leave sticky honeydew, while armored scales generally do not. Their coverings also affect treatment contact. Verify the kind of scale present before choosing a labeled product; the lack of stickiness does not rule out an infestation.
Isolate the plant
Move an infested houseplant away from the rest of the collection while you assess the problem.
Remove visible scale
On sturdy houseplants, light infestations can often be reduced by gently scraping or wiping insects from stems and leaves.
Wash the plant
A careful rinse can remove some young crawler stages. Keep the plant in appropriate light and warmth while foliage dries.
Repeat inspections
Scale management takes persistence because newly hatched crawlers may appear after adults are removed. Check the plant weekly.
Check Whether Removed Covers Were Still Alive
Old covers may remain after insects have died. Look beneath a lifted cover and monitor fresh settlement rather than spraying because every old bump is still visible. Protect delicate stems during removal and avoid aggressive scraping that causes more damage than the insects.
On a heavily infested plant, removal of a few stems may reduce the burden, but assess whether enough healthy canopy would remain. A disposable severely infested plant can sometimes be a continuing source for the collection. Before choosing that option, confirm active scale rather than mistaking empty coverings for live insects, and check plants that have been touching it.
