Variegated pothos with brown tips on several leaves

Why Does My Pothos Have Brown Tips?

Pothos tips can turn crisp while the rest of a leaf stays healthy, or browning can advance with wider root stress. Examine texture and the pot’s moisture cycle before interpreting every brown tip as low humidity.

Separate Crispy Tips From Soft Dark Tissue

Dry dead tips fit a history of repeated severe drying or salt stress more closely than soft expanding lesions. Inspect the lower mix as well as the surface. A pot can be dry at the top but wet around damaged roots, so both extremes require checking. Review recent fertilizer doses and whether the pot drains freely.

Common triggers

Symptom Likely trigger Helpful change
Dry brown tips on older leaves Low humidity or underwatering Water more consistently
Brown tips after heavy feeding Salt buildup Flush soil and ease fertilizer use
Browning with soft stems Root stress Check drainage and watering frequency
Tips only on sun-exposed leaves Light stress Move to bright indirect light

Simple fixes

Water when the top layer dries, use a well-draining mix, and avoid both bone-dry neglect and constant sogginess. Trim crispy tips if the appearance bothers you.

Try One Measurable Care Adjustment

If the roots are sound, stabilize watering and reduce excess feeding before adding other interventions. Mineral buildup may justify appropriate flushing only in a draining pot; standing water in a cachepot makes that approach counterproductive. Trim dead tissue if desired while leaving healthy leaf margins intact. Mark two newly expanded leaves and watch their tips through the next watering cycles. Healthy new growth is a more useful result than repeatedly trimming the same damaged leaves.

Low-mineral water can be a useful comparison where recurring salts are suspected, but changing water does not correct blocked drainage. Keep the watering method consistent during that comparison so the effect is interpretable. Review whether the mix already contains fertilizer before adding another liquid feed. Several simultaneous changes make it harder to tell which condition caused continued browning.
