Why Are My Monstera Leaves Turning Yellow?

One aging monstera leaf is less alarming than several leaves yellowing within a week. Count which leaves changed, compare their age, and check how long the center of the pot remains wet.

Check Beneath the Decorative Outer Pot

A nursery pot can have drainage holes yet still sit in retained water inside a cachepot. Lift it out after watering and empty the outer container. Check the lower mix, not just a dry surface, before concluding that the plant needs another drink.

Overwatering is the top suspect

Monsteras like evenly moist soil, but they do not want to stay wet for long stretches. If the mix is dense or the pot drains poorly, roots weaken and multiple leaves may yellow together. This is especially likely when yellowing comes with soft stems or a musty smell in the pot.

Other common causes

Low light

Monsteras tolerate lower light, but growth slows and the plant uses water more slowly. In a dim corner, overwatering becomes more likely and leaves may begin to yellow.

Root crowding

A pot-bound monstera may struggle to take up water and nutrients evenly. If roots circle tightly and water runs straight through the pot, it may be time to repot.

Natural aging

An occasional older leaf will yellow and fade as the plant matures. If the rest of the plant looks strong, simply remove that leaf once it has mostly yellowed.

How to fix yellow monstera leaves

• Water only when the top layer of the mix has dried slightly.
• Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix if the current soil stays dense and wet.
• Place the plant in bright, indirect light.
• Repot if roots are crowded or the soil has broken down.
• Trim only fully yellow leaves, not slightly stressed green ones that may recover.

Repot Only for a Specific Root Problem

Yellowing alone does not prove that a monstera needs a larger container. Inspect for dense crowding, degraded mix, or soft roots before repotting. A much larger pot may prolong wetness, while a suitable airy medium and appropriate light can improve water use without a major size increase.
